Distraction osteogenesis is a type of bone augmentation procedure that is performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to correct jaw and facial bone abnormalities or to restore lost bone. At our practice, we typically utilize this technique to increase the amount of bone available for successful dental implant placement or to increase bone in orthognathic surgery cases. Dr. Esmail has many years of experience performing distraction osteogenesis and completes this minimally invasive procedure in our state-of-the-art practice in Abbotsford, BC.
Benefits of Distraction Osteogenesis
Distraction osteogenesis is a slow process that creates bone very gradually, which can offer more controlled results than other bone augmentation surgeries. After undergoing this procedure, many patients have less post-surgical swelling and discomfort than with other bone-augmenting procedures.
How does distraction osteogenesis work?
The procedure utilizes a special device to slowly separate bone, allowing the natural healing process to fill the space in the bone with new, healthy bone tissue. During the procedure, Dr. Esmail will insert the distraction device into the areas of bone that require augmentation — in most cases, this will be in the upper or lower jaws where more height or width is needed to place dental implants successfully. After the initial procedure, the patient will return to our practice so that Dr. Esmail can ensure that the surgical site is healing properly. Once the initial healing period is complete, the patient will return to the practice for regular adjustments to the distraction device. Most patients report that the discomfort related with adjustments to the distraction device is a bit like having braces tightened, and it resolves quickly.
Distraction osteogenesis is typically an outpatient procedure performed in our practice, and patients undergo anesthesia so that they feel no pain during surgery. Our team works closely with each patient during the entire course of treatment to create the best possible result.
